Summary
Neither Link or Zelda had a chance to respond before the mummy held its hands over its chest and gathered the smoke-like gloom that seeped from its chest. With a guttural roar, it raised its arms. The gloom surged upwards and violently collided with the cavern ceiling above.
Zelda could only stare in horror before the ground cracked underneath her feet. She gasped, stumbled back, and fell backward. Link jumped after her, face twisted in panic and pain, and reached out to her with his damaged arm. They just brushed fingertips before Zelda felt herself come to an abrupt stop in the air, and Link fell past her. He twisted in the air, trying to grab onto her outstretched arm, but to no avail.
“Link!” Zelda screamed, watching in horror as Link tumbled into the depths below, swallowed by the darkness.
After that, she felt a tug on her arm, and the world went white.

Or: a TOTK AU in which neither Link or Zelda are sent back in time. Instead, Link is trapped in the Depths with a corrupted arm, and Zelda is brought to the Great Sky Island by Rauru, tasked with saving Hyrule and finding Link before he's overtaken by gloom. -

Summary
Sleep refused her that night. Despite the darkness and her fatigue, no sleep overcame her. She sat there, mind consumed by questions and miserable feelings. What had Zelda ever done to deserve this? Any of this? Why would Link not trust her enough to ask for help? Why was he so… empty? Why had he cut open his arm?
The questions remained, unanswered and piling atop one another with no end to them in sight. And so they piled up, and up, and up. The final thought she had before she finally sank beneath the tides of consciousness was an idle prayer to Hylia. It was the first time she had prayed to Hylia since before activating her powers. Years of stony silence from the goddess had only served to sever the princess’s belief in her power to help.
And yet, for some reason, she prayed. “Hylia,” she thought exhaustedly, “Just make Link trust me. Let me help him…” Her thoughts trailed off into meaninglessness and faded into restless dreams. The final thing she saw as sleep laid claim to her again was a golden beam of sunlight pressing into her eyes.

The song fades, and there’s applause as he releases Mipha back to her attendants. He bows as he lets her go, his lips brushing over the back of her knuckles to honor the custom, and as another song begins the room turns to Zelda, who has the privilege of his final dance.
Link’s eyes are on her. There’s nothing in his face, no remorse in his gaze, only the blank acceptance he wore when she told him they were through. The sword that sliced them apart taunts her, its hilt twinkling behind his twitching ear as it no doubt whispers to him in a voice she will never hear. He holds out his hand.
Zelda swallows, feels Impa’s sympathetic eyes on her cheek, and crosses the room to take it.
“Hero of Hyrule,” she greets stiffly, looking him in the eye.
“Princess.” His eyes linger on her mouth before they flick up to meet hers. He lifts her hand in the air and places his other on her waist. His touch burns through his white leather gloves and all seven layers of her clothing. “How are you faring tonight?”

The claiming of the Master Sword rips them apart. A month later, Link is assigned Zelda's appointed knight.

Summary
No matter how many times she attends the annual summer ball, it never gets easier. The muggy heat of the day seeps into the cloudless night, trapped in towering stone ceilings and cushioned furniture. Her father’s insistence to keep blazing lanterns burning alongside the grand brazier in the centre of the hall consistently acts as a deterrent to all noble families with a lick of common sense. Sadly, there seems to be a shortage of good judgement these days – the people are pouring in through the doors, heads held high in frumpy clothing and bedazzled ears.
They have all travelled from across Hyrule, the far reaches of the land, to attend this melting pot. Willingly. Hylia knows Zelda would not be here if she had a choice.

Link and Zelda spend a night at Hyrule Castle to finally dispell rumours of the old King's ghostly return. Zelda remembers her old home well, although almost too well, and in the new era her kingdom faces she feels she has not changed enough to march alongside it. Her time as princess has mastered her in wisdom and courage is forever at her side, but to move forwards Zelda must claim something she has resented for as long as she has been heir to claim. The decree of 'power' she must take hold of eludes her.
To search for answers she seeks advice from friends she can trust, then goes on a rainswept journey alone to sift out the ghosts of her past and find the right way through the storm- for both her kingdom and herself...

'I do not need to know how many shades of blue can be found in the irises of the Hero's eyes or that in a certain light they can match the Master Sword's hilt (a dubious assertion). Nor do I need to be made aware of how many individual sweat droplets he excretes while partaking in his early morning training exercises, which he apparently practises while half-nude. I have also yet to find myself interested in how long it takes for him to notice his hair tie is missing or that his hair is longer than it appears and smells of tea tree shampoo.'
