Summary
Portgas D. Ace died during the war, his heart stopped and he took his last breath in the arms of his little brother. And yet, after a long, extremely realistic and vivid dream in which he met his mother for a day – their first and last together, Ace woke up.
But was it really a dream? The hibiscus flower in his hair and the letter in the pocket of his shorts seemed to say otherwise.
OR
His body is slowly recovering after the war, but Ace's mind must also heal so that he can ever wake up. It does, twenty years in the past.

“I've tried to live without regrets all my life,” Ace replied. “And I thought I had succeeded. But now that my loved ones are lost to me, I realize everything I would like to tell them, all the promises I have not yet fulfilled.”
He had promised Sabo to watch over Luffy and Luffy not to die. He had promised Makino that he would eat vegetables as often as possible, Dadan that he would flee if the fight became too difficult for him, and Gramps that they would never come face to face on an execution platform. He had promised Yamato that he would come and free him from his chains and to Tama that she would one day be able to eat her fill. He had promised Isuka that he would not allow himself to be captured by anyone other than her and to Deuce that he would give him enough adventures to write dozens of books. He had promised Pops that he would be his son and his crew that he would be careful on the way. He had promised himself that he would avenge Thatch.
He had promised everyone to come back. And he never did.
“And you can do it Ace, you will find again all these people and keep your promises,” Mom assured him, slipping a hibiscus flower into his hair.
“How can you be so sure?” Ace asked.
Ace was lost twenty years in the past, even if he managed to influence destiny and give his younger self a better chance, he wouldn't be the one to see his friends and family again. It would be a better version of him, one that wouldn't ruin the lives of the people around him.
Maybe it was for the best. That the existing version of himself ceased to exist to make way for a version that could keep his promises and tell his loved ones that he loved them.
“Because true and sincere friendships can transcend space and time, can last longer than a lifetime,” Mom replied. “Because you are a D and we laugh at the face of Fate. We don't let anyone define us or tell us what to do, we decide our own destiny.”
Mom was right.
Ace was the product of his parents and he had always hated it.
He got angry like his father and had the proud arrogance of his mother. He had his mother's taste for adventure and his father's charisma. He carried his parents' dreams and doubts and created his own path. He had Roger's eyes and Rouge's smile. He was both the best and the worst of his parents.
But he also shared their will and their determination, their refusal to give up . They did not bow down to any man or god.
(He was the son of a King, a Conqueror and an Emperor.)
This realization left him strangely calm, as if a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Ace closed his eyes and let the wind carry him, the setting sun gently warming his skin.
_
“Why do you have a flower in your hair?” Shanks asked, bringing his hand to Ace’s head.
“Leave it,” Ace said, stopping Shanks' hand, not being able to contain his smile. “It's normal.”
It was real. He had met his mother, everything was true. His mother loved him, his mother loved him. She didn't hate him for ruining her life, she thought he deserved to live. Everything was true. Ace might cry.
“Is it a hibiscus flower?” Shanks asked, taken by surprise.
“I saw Mom, Shanks, she’s so pretty,” revealed Ace. “And she loves me.”
“Of course she loves you,” Shanks said, his voice tight with emotion. “We all love you, Firefly. The little guy behind that door more than anyone.”

Summary
“You have no idea who I am!” Ace yelled, shrugging the hand off roughly. It shouldn’t have worked, Roger was clearly just humouring him, but all that mattered was to have it off- “Neither of you knows me! You weren’t there!”
His parents’ faces grew blurry.
“You weren’t there,” he repeated, hanging his head low and wrapping his arms around himself in a pale imitation of his brother’s hugs. “You left me all alone.”
Maybe Luffy had a point, back when he told them loneliness was the worst kind of pain.
Rouge was the first one to move, bringing Ace back into her embrace.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry, darling.”
He let himself be held, but didn’t dare relax. Surely that bastard would try to get in on the hug, surely he would interrupt, surely-
Roger was crying.
Or: On your 15th birthday, you are gifted a visit from your parents, as they were on their last birthday before death.
For most people, it's just a chance to remind themself of how adorable their children were, all those years ago. Maybe to meet again a spouse departed too early.
For Ace, it changes everything.

Summary
Portgas D. Rouge was a strange Captain, mainly because she kept claiming that Brook was going to be the musician of the future Pirate King. Not the one of the first Pirate King, but the one after. For now, he was pretty happy to be part of her crew though and help her on her search for a good hat.
(Or: Monkey D. Luffy doesn’t do normal. Not even reincarnation.)

Ch2
Brook didn’t know anyone stranger than his Captain. Portgas D. Rouge was a force to be reckoned with. She was bright, loud and vibrant, never really slowing down. In her own way, she forced people to go along with her pace, never really just inviting them to join her. No, Rouge managed to draw people in, attracting all kinds of attention, by merely existing. Not everyone could stand it though, which was why Brook supposed their crew was so small.
They were barely ten members, Captain and cabin boy included in his count. Brook hadn’t thought Rouge would let a nine-year-old join, but she had shown up with little Mihawk a few weeks ago and the kid had stayed ever since. He was a stubborn little brat, demanding sword lessons from Brook every day and Haki lessons from their Captain right after.
“He’s like a more serious Zoro!” Rouge had chirped, squishing Mihawk’s cheeks to his protest.
Brook didn’t know what a Zoro was, but he trusted his Captain’s word.
She tended to be right about all things dear to her.
-
Rouge tried the hat on, moving it around a few times with a thoughtful expression.
-
Rouge herself hadn’t known the truth behind her dreams and the Voice whispering so sweetly in her ears until she had almost drowned at the beach one morning, playing with the other kids.Baterilla had been so full of adventure before Rouge had choked on saltwater.
Afterward, it had appeared much too dull, simple, and gray for the late Pirate King.
Monkey D. Luffy had lived his life. He had fulfilled his own dream and watched his Nakama reach their goals one by one, joyful smiles spread over their faces.
He’d died in battle like he had wanted, and now he was back again.
And Bored.
Luffy, Rouge, hadn’t wanted to become Pirate King again - and, yes, she would have been King still. That was the proper title and the name Rouge wore now didn’t change that. But without her dream to go chase or her Nakama to support, Rouge felt empty. What was there to do when you had already fulfilled the dream you had pursued all your life?
She and her brothers had sworn to live a life without regrets, so Rouge tried her best to look forward, even if she had a hard time seeing anything interesting at all.
She missed her friends and her family.
And she missed her hat.
Shanks had let Luffy keep it in the end. The Mugiwara Pirates couldn’t really be Straw Hats without their signature symbol after all.
-
And somewhere in-between the waves of the sea, Rouge learned how to appreciate swimming, picked up a crew and goal: she wanted a new hat.And now she was finally looking at it.
Monkey D. Luffy had lived and died, but Rouge was a pirate and pirates were selfish.
And she really, really wanted her hat.
“You can’t have it!” Shanks protested, pointing accusingly at the straw hat. His voice was much too high and he was much too short. “It belongs to my Captain!”
-
Rouge twirled her hat in her hands, then tucked her flower behind the hat’s red ribbon and put it on her head. Its weight was familiar, it fit well.No way she’d give it back now.
“Tell your Captain if he wants it back, he can come and fight me for it!”
“What!? You can’t do that!” Shanks shouted but made no move to attack her.
“I’m a pirate, I can do whatever I want.”
-
The Hat Stealer Pirates don’t return, but they don’t mind their Captain checking in on them, delivering stories of her children and sparring against them.
-
Notes:
- mihawk never showed up bc he's not killing his Captain's kid. they rewake his warlord status and he gives not a single fuck
- shanks is there from the start
- Rouge is so fucking OP and I love that for her
- Ace figures out his mom is also his younger brother when Luffy becomes pirate king and is so confused
- Rouge and Roger's relationship was strange to write bc I generally speaking HC Luffy as somewhere AroAce.
