I stare into the wall, eyes glued onto anything that would make me feel that this was real. The drone of the heart rate monitor in the background. The hum of the footsteps migrating away from them. The softening of the chest compressions. The heart-wrenching tone of their mother’s screams and their brothers’ cries. The silent tears of my eyes. And that final note, that rings for eternity, “Time of death, 23:49.”
I close my eyes, press the end call button at the bottom of the screen, and fall back onto my bed. Tears roll down my cheeks and onto the sheets. While staring at the ceiling, I think of them. The world fades away and I am enveloped in the darkness of the night.
