Jason had always had this dream as a child, over and over again, of his mom high on a shelf like a small, fragile porcelain doll dangling too close to the edge. She was always just too high for his little hands to reach, even stood on the tallest piece of furniture he could climb on. As he got older, she just seemed to get further and further out of reach, moving away even as he tried desperately to help. Eventually, it began to end with her falling off the edge of that little shelf, slipping down behind a large, damp cabinet he was too small to move, losing her forever behind the rotting wood placed right against the wall in their dingy little apartment.
It had all clicked for him when he came back to her dead in the bathroom from a heroin overdose.
