‘Do you think…?’ Steve’s voice cracks, his eyes are watery when he looks up at Eddie. ‘Do you think it’s the end of the world?’
Billy carefully pulls free the lace ties of Steve’s sneakers.
Steve doesn’t notice.

Summary
Hawkins, Indiana.
A quiet little town, one where people leave their doors unlocked and they sing carols come Christmas. A place where the kids skinny dip in the lake in summer, where crimes aren’t taken too seriously if they’re minor. You get a couple of passes from the Chief, but never three. It’s a town where everyone knows everyone and gossip is a local commodity. There’s not much to fear in a small town like Hawkins. Mundane worries, every day anxieties that melt away come weekends. Things gone missing, but they usually turn up sooner or later.
It's quiet here.
Trusting.
Isolated.

‘Come now, love. Food and water. Pretend we are in the cave again.’ Eddie lifts him easily, bridal style, he carries Steve into the kitchen as if he weighs nothing. The wings are gone.
Steve frowns, reaching behind to feel where they once were but is met with only knobbly bones and sharp shoulders. ‘I miss them.’
‘I know you do.’ Eddie nuzzles his cheek. ‘You loved me first as a winged thing, pathetic and small.’
Despite himself, Steve grins. ‘I did.’
‘Do you love me now, in this form?’
A sobering feeling settles in his bones, bringing clarity to the moment, reality. They’re in Steve’s penthouse, the kitchen. There is still blood and viscera, black and grey. Steve is naked. Eddie is not.
Steve has human blood on him.
