Like the “heathen kings of old” before Carrot’s line sort of distant. The kings that were disposed of by Carrot’s ancestors. There were all these little hopes and musings Crowley buried so deep in his heart it ached to bring them out into the light to catalogue their faults and flaws, and each time Aziraphale sought him out, or asked his opinion on some weighty manner that was hanging on him, or even just smiled, those little wishings grew bigger and bigger, pressing in on him until he felt as if he was being crushed.
“Princes do not fall in love with gardener boys,” he told himself one night, staring into the shard of looking glass he kept on a shelf, hoping it would help, hoping that hearing it out loud would make him believe it, would help him put all these ridiculous notions behind him.
It didn't work.
Crowley and Aziraphale, the gardener's boy and the prince, meet as children and develop an unlikely friendship.
By the time they're twenty, everything has changed.

Bookmarker's Notes
This book (or series, I suppose, but I see it as one long book) is really good, tho it is an interesting one.
In some ways, it falls into some common tropes, and doesn't offer much new in that regard. However, in a lot of other ways, it is still a fun read and does offer some refreshing differences.
A big unique aspect is the focus on wizarding traditions. Whilst I've seen the topic explored before, I've never seen it so... extreme, in some ways. It's wizarding monarchy, through and through. There are traditionalists, non-traditionalists and anti-traditionalists. Whilst I've seen books explore wizarding traditions before, it's usually based on wiccan traditions and culture. This is not. It has some minor influences from it, but a lot of it is royalty and very... old fashioned. It's also quite extreme, so it's not clear cut on whether it's a good thing or not. I, personally, like that. It's flawed and interesting to consider and fun to read about because Harry embraces his heritage and others might not always like that, and that heritage is fairly elitist. It ain't blood purity but it does have some of the same themes, although both sides get vilified. I think that's what makes it so interesting. This does play a big role in the story, and it'll be up to you on whether you like it or not.
The characterisations in this book are pretty well done. Harry ends up having quite a large friend group, which helps make him a lot more well-rounded as a character. It's fascinating to see:
A) how far he comes, as his own character, and how natural it feels. He starts off as probably the most socially awkward kid in history, and a hell of a pushover, desperate for love and affection and protection, but he ends up really strong and fierce, independent but loved, a complete gentleman who can verbally (and also in a duel) eviscerate anyone who is a shitter to him, and doesn't tolerate fools easily, and doesn't forgive easily either. His relationships with his friends feel real and dynamic - he gains some, loses some, feels betrayed, gets closer to, sometimes fights with all of them. This makes it feel all the more real. This ties into the next point:
B) His friends are all unique characters, and the author doesn't mind taking the time for little scenes and conversations and interactions and all the things needed to really get a feel of these characters. I can write well over 2k words just describing some of his friends on detail. It's neat and they add a lot of the levity needed in the books. It's really well done, and adds a LOT to the overall experience. The books aren't overly serious, but Harry is a pretty serious, studious and solemn kid - tho he can be a bit sassy at times. His friends and the fluff in between really lighten the overall mood and help the pacing and story, and in rounding out his character.
The ending is... okay. It's a good ending, but it feels like you've reached the cusp of "ooo this is gonna be the good part, what I've been waiting for!" and then it's like "well that's it then, you can imagine the rest, right?" Which... isn't a great feeling. The pacing can also be a bit off. Third year is literally skipped, and I would've loved to have seen more years in general but it doesn't really allow for that. So yknow. You win some, you lose some.
There's also a lot of tiny plot lines that get dropped all the time. Harry gets snake pets and then they promptly get forgotten. Dumbledore is determined to kill Harry but eventually becomes a fugitive and now I have to assume he just doesn't want to anymore? He seemed pretty determined before. Granger starts reading into Dark Magic and traditionalism and then who knows what happens next. Those are just some examples but there are a lot of little plot points that just... well, get forgotten. Which is a pity, because they sounded like cool plot points.
In any case, it isnt exactly a series I'd reread but I would recommend TO read. It can really damn witty and sharp and fun, and there's relatively no angst. It's not light-hearted, but it's definitely not dark at all and again, is generally just a good experience all around.

Summary
The palace has gathered the young women of noble families to find the emperor a suitable empress, queens and perhaps a few concubines as well. Aziraphale, the youngest daughter of Count Herald at the age of 19, is amongst these women, having just been introduced in high society a year prior. She's told by her father to keep her head down and do her best to bring honour to her house, alongside the wealth her family is paid for sending her as a tribute. Her brother, Gabriel, gives her a farewell gift and makes her promise to do her best to take of herself.
Aziraphale has no illusions of what will happen to her. She is a counts daughter, and not even beautiful in the way noblewomen are supposed to be. Opinionated, shy, with too plump a body and cheeks, alongside a head of unruly curls, she expects to be introduced then forgotten quite easily.
Things do NOT go according to plan
