Summary
Before he knew it, the former Dominant survived a multitude of equivalent lifetimes... Not a wrinkle, nor gray hair to show for it… at present, that is... All thanks to the last vestiges of the Phoenix’s influence, its regenerative embers endured inside his very soul.
A cosmic irony, an outlier to the worlds natural order... Isolated... Useless. A firebird with clipped wings.
But perhaps, Joshua need not see this journey through alone, not anymore.

“Father once told me that our Eikons sense our emotions. That they feel our pain, our fear, our anger, just as we do. That is why they lash out when we feel things. But he also told me that they are beings beyond our comprehension, great beasts with minds of their own. Thus, we must learn to control them. To not let them destroy us.”
Or what really happened at the remembrance ceremony, to leave an mutual impression that lasted 20 years.

“It’s been a long time, Dion.” Joshua Rosfield’s voice cracks over the words. They stare at each other for a long moment before he tentatively extends his hand. “Well met.”
Dion feels like a man beset by raging winds, buffeted from one emotion to another: shock, longing, wonder, hurt, joy. His body is not his own; he raises his hand and blindly reaches forward, his eyes never leaving Joshua’s lovely face. Their hands miss and they instead manage to grasp forearms instead, not unlike the ancient Valisthean greeting between princes. Joshua’s grip burns him; he feels fire travel from the very tips of his fingers up his arm and down his spine. The moment hangs suspended between them, endless and electric.
“Indeed,” Dion croaks, mind still reeling.
---
Through a twist of fate, Dion takes his adopted daughter to a book signing by the elusive Lord Margrace. He doesn’t expect to be reunited with his childhood friend and first crush Joshua. Twenty years after losing contact, they begin corresponding once again, slowly rebuilding their friendship and eventually, perhaps, their relationship.

Joshua can’t say what possesses him in that moment, just that it's carnal and instinctual, and he wouldn’t have been able to stop it even if he tried. He brings his hand up and back down against Dion’s ass. The crack of his palm echoes in their small bedroom. Silence follows.
A pitiful, broken sound tumbles right out of Dion’s chest. “Again,” he hisses. “Do it again, Joshua.”

Summary
Five years after Ultima’s defeat, those left behind have no choice but to push onward in a world still on the precipice of ruin. Left with all that remains of Clive—her twin boys—both Jill and Joshua do all that can be to ensure the world they grow up in is one of less strife and struggle than what came before. But the destruction of the crystals and the god that created them has left the aether and eikons in a state of chaotic distress that plagues the entirety of Valisthea. And now, to have received a letter from the north about stone bearers coming back to life, Jill has a new mystery to unfold.
At the same time, Clive finds himself waking on what he thinks must be the western Rosarian coast, though how he arrived there, he doesn’t know. Nor has he any idea how much time has passed since that final fight with Ultima. But as he begins to investigate, he sees a battle of eikonic proportions in the distance, one that revives old, bitter memories. Ifrit, perhaps, can make up for wrongs wrought so long ago.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, a shadow manipulates them all, his eyes set on those who would become dominants and tools both.

The muscles of his thighs burn from the effort of keeping himself propped open, bent elbow nearly slipping on the scattered remnants atop Dion's desk. But he relishes the pain, seeks it out; it reminds him that he is alive, that he could be afforded the opportunity to live and breathe and feel in this moment of respite, pinned beneath the claw-tipped hands of Dion's carnality.
He is Phoenix. Fire and light thrum through his blood and bones; never would his intrinsic bond with his Eikon ever allow even a lick of pale flame to harm his achingly human flesh.

Past throngs of panicked citizens scrabbling to get out of harm’s way, it was clear in every face Joshua glimpsed, every expression of fear and disbelief: The prince would never do this. Something’s wrong.
And with a brief, painful flash of recollection—his father’s bloody, lifeless face, cries of men burning, dying at Phoenix Gate as he lost control—Joshua called upon his Eikon and took to the skies.
I must put a stop to this.

"Pray, dont be alarmed, Prince Dion," Joshua whispers soothingly, a hand splayed over Dion's abdomen and his knees digging just so into Dion's hips. He holds in his other hand a knife, as sharp and lovely as the eyes of its wielder. He aims it just beneath Dion's jaw, pointed directly at the soft and vulnerable skin of his throat. "I merely wished to speak with you privately," he adds with a small shrug, pretty smile dripping with some unknown promise. Something wicked, something - profane.

What he expects is a misbehaving pixie. Perhaps a familiar, come to pick and poke at his herbs. Unlikely to be an entirely unmagical beast; they can sense the power that ensconces Joshua’s homestead and keep their distance. Unlikely to be any sort of threat, he’d placed fresh wards against any with ill intent on the trees, not a tenday past. Maybe, maybe another witch; come to call for a favor or, perhaps, to pluck out his eyes.
What he doesn't expect is a heap of a prince, curled in on himself between the cheerful flowers of yarrow and the stalks of ginger. He’s crushing the feverfew, Joshua notes with a bit of a pinched expression, dousing the magic in his hands and crossing his arms over his chest.

Jill bit down on her lip. "Well. You see, Dion is not a particularly tactile person, by nature."
"He's quite tactile with me."
"Still," she said, "Dion seems very much a man of actions. He seems to be the type of man who would prefer you to come to him, for you to... show your affections."
