Since Lucas and Mike have been friends they’ve kept secrets for each other. They’ve lied for each other. The party have always considered each other like brothers. They’d fatefully found their people in the midst of good-for-nothing Hawkins. Lucas would lie for Mike and Mike would lie for Lucas. It wasn’t always heavy stuff. There was a time when Lucas blamed himself for the hole in the Wheelers’ basement wall. A time Mike had told Lucas’ parents it was his fault they were watching TV past midnight. Elementary lies.But, since these strange things have been happening, they’ve gotten better at lying. Maybe that’s not true. They got better at hiding. They've done it together. It should be a no-brainer that he’s not going to tell anyone.
And yet it isn’t. So, it must be something bad. Something that's embarrassing or tragic.
“I won’t tell,” Lucas promises. “Just me and you.”
Mike turns to him, his long hair framing his face. “I- I wouldn’t tell her I loved her. I couldn’t.”
