Mike Wheeler was a Dungeon Master, not a player. He was a pretty cruddy Paladin, all things considered, so he preferred his time behind the board - watching, observing, taking notes. So many notes.
However, when everything in his life is pushing him to play the game, he has a hard time figuring out the rules of the campaign. Maybe the answers are in his old D&D notes? Or, if he's betting on his luck, they're not.

The year is 1984, and after Ted Wheeler dies because of some stupid lab accident at his annoying government job in Hawkins, Indiana, Thirteen-year-old Mike and his family are forced to move there and stay at some lousy trailer park because 1.) moving there was the closest thing they had to still being with him, not that Mike really cared, 2.) it was the cheapest place his mom could afford when you’re in charge of a family of four with no man in the house, and 3.) because Mike had kinda maybe sorta did something really, really bad to another boy at school that unfortunately just lined up with the time him and his family had to move so… nothing important really.

Mike Wheeler has saved the world twice now with the help of...well, a lot of people. But especially his now girlfriend, Eleven.
He thinks the world has finally healed, and the party can go back to normal. His best friend Will finally has the Upside Down out of him and the Gate was closed, so there was no more Demogorgons or the Mind Flayer to deal with.
But pain came to Mike anyway, from a part of him he never would've expected - his own mind, and it causes problems for him that he never thought he'd have to deal with.

Then Mike came closer. He wrapped his arms around Will and whispered in his ear, "You're okay," in the softest, most caring voice Will had heard ever. And he repeated, "You're okay," over and over again.

Mike's teeth are chattering so hard they hurt. He's shaking, his voice is shaking, and everything is spinning. The world ripples like murky water through his tears and blotchy vision, but Will is still. He focuses on him, on the fingers trickling soothingly down his spine like they're strumming a harp, and the smaller hand wriggled into his own, on the warmth of the body beside his own.
"I-I thought I-I could just stop whenever I needed to..."
"But you can't?" Will whispers. He sounds anguished, and it floods Mike with more shame than he can stomach. He gulps loudly, and at the nauseated look, Will looks slightly alarmed before Mike manages to reel his sickness back.
"No..." Mike echoes. It's horrific to admit, "I can't."
