Summary
Almost two years after the Battle of the Five Armies, Thorin asks Bilbo to return to the mountain with the excuse of needing a "Hobbit-Dwarf Relations Advisor." What that entails, the king has no clue, but he is willing to make up a fake title and job just to get the chance to make amends with the hobbit and, in time, make his deep affections known. Unbeknownst to Thorin, Bilbo is already madly in love with him. Through a series of ridiculous cultural miscommunications, Bilbo finds himself engaged to the King Under the Mountain, while at the same time, Thorin is heartbroken that the hobbit, his heart's desire, has found love in another.
~ A subverted version of the "Bilbo is married/engaged to Thorin in the ways of dwarves and doesn't know it" trope. Inspired by the omitted information from The Hobbit that reads, "curious habit in [hobbit] weddings. They kept it (always officially and very often actually) a dead secret for years who they were going to marry, even when they knew. Then they suddenly went and got married and went off without an address for a week or two (or even longer)." ~

In the Shire there were two truths. The Tooks were odd and the Baggins were respectable. The Baggins family dealt in contracts and favours, and while the Shire knew that the Tooks were odd, it was the Baggins family that had other blood running through their veins.
Bilbo Baggins did not go running out his door for want of an adventure, he went running out his door because of a terribly worded contract and a laughable quest that somehow held the spark of other.
In this story, it is not the Tooks that held fae blood in their family tree, it is the Baggins, and theirs is so much closer to the surface. -

When the reaper leaves him to walk his path to the Garden alone, Bilbo comes to the conclusion no one would miss one little hobbit, so instead of heading down the path, he decides to go on one last adventure. He always had meant to make it to the mountain one last time, and now he has all the time in the world.

„We all lost family that day,“ Balin choked out.
Bilbo stared at him across the fire.
„The day the dragon came,“ Dwalin continued in a low voice, „we‘ve lost our baby sister, our Freya. It was my fault. I should not have fought with her. I couldn’t find her that day, no matter how long I searched. I have no right to call myself her brother.“
Dwalin stood up and left the lit space. The company fell silent again.
The hobbit heard a lot of stories from the dwarrows along their journey, about home and family, but seldomly about loss and not once from Dwalin and Balin about the day the dragon came.
Bilbo could see how Balin sheepishly wiped away some tears, and he witnessed an expression in Thorins face he had never seen before. Regret and the pain of a broken heart.

Freya's ear itched as if someone was talking behind her back. Probably Thranduil, that pointy eared drama queen of the woodland realm. She shifted her attention back onto her son, a splitting image of his father, riding a large black bear as if it was a pony. She could not help but smile, pushing away the sorrow in her heart, as she thought about her brothers and how she had lost them the day the dragon came.

Primed and poised, she was always ready to entertain, and you would never find her pantry empty. By all accounts, Bluebell was the epitome of a perfect hobbit. Except, she wasn’t a hobbit at all. She was a star, having fallen from the heavens above. No one ever spoke of it, at least not in polite company. It was whispered when there was beer to loosen lips and pipe weed was shared among neighbors.
Thorin's on a quest and somehow Bluebell gets dragged into it. She blames Gandalf.
