This is more of a "zuko botches his escape attempt and spends the rest of the war in prison, and then when he becomes Fire Lord they leave him in prison" kind of thing.
After committing treason, Zuko spends months in prison, and even after both his father and Azula go missing, the guards can't coax him out of his cell. And then the Avatar shows up. How's the Gaang supposed to talk to a Fire Lord who doesn't even believe he's the Fire Lord?

It didn’t matter how much Iroh regretted, it had still happened. Zuko had still been hurt. The Fire Nation had still wreaked havoc on the world. Hakoda had always viewed regret as a wasted emotion, and he still thought that. What good could lamenting the past do to help the future? How did Iroh's regret help Zuko? -

Summary
Zuko got a lot of things from his mother, her eyes, her hair, her heart, but those things aren't held in high regard in the Fire Nation palace. After his mother vanishes and his father ascends the throne, Zuko has to do his best to be the prince his father expects him to be, but since when was his best ever good enough. Without his mother's protection, things go from bad to worse and at 13 he ends up disfigured for the crime of caring too much.
This fic is a dark divergent au where Zuko is burned but never banished and things take a turn for the worst. Finally on the day of black sun, Zuko decides to stand up for himself and leave the palace to join the Avatar and defeat his father. Somewhat a retelling, but entirely from Zuko's perspective.
