Summary
Astronaut Tommy Kinard has a chance encounter with space nerd and firefighter Evan "Buck" Buckley at a party before he goes up in space with Dr. Karen Wilson for what should have been a nine-day mission but becomes a nine-month one. Tommy finds himself growing closer to Evan as they talk to each other through the radio during that long visit to space.
EXCERPT:
So.
Here Tommy was.
At a party filled with mostly people Tommy knew vaguely from Karen and once when one of them, Howie, saved him from a gas leak at a mall. But Tommy didn’t really know most of the people at this party well.
The plan: make it an hour before getting out of Dodge.
Well.
That was the plan.
Before the hottest guy at the party started making a beeline toward him.

Summary

Summary
The world is divided between those who go away and those who are left behind, between those who look forward and those who are forced to watch the shoulders of people who leave without even deigning to look back or even just say goodbye. Those who are abandoned remain stuck, forced to hold tons and tons of weight as Atlas, without anyone’ support.
Buck knows very well that loneliness’ feeling that haunts you even when you are surrounded by so many people. -

“I’m Edmundo by the way.”
He shakes the offered hand, “Nice to meet you, Edmundo. I’m Buck!” The name sounds vaguely Earth-like to him but it was also from an old language that he’s unsure of. For all he knows, it could be a same sounds, different meaning situation. That happens a lot in different languages. Pretty funny how often it happ—
“No, my dad’s from Arakko, alright!” Christopher interrupts his personal musings by apparently reading his thoughts and answering out loud.

Summary
Buck is used to loss. He never really had his parents, which is a different kind of very unfortunate loss. Maddie left with Doug. Buck himself came and went from various places, jobs and friendly people. He lost himself after a ladder truck crushed his leg. His triumphant return to a regular life slipped through his fingers when he almost choked to death on his own blood. Red came and went so fast, Buck has to look up his obituary sometimes to remind himself that he was real. He lost his favorite person ever to unforgiving tsunami waters. And somehow, through all of that, he nearly lost his family. And no, it wasn't because of the lawsuit.
But he'll never forget the passion in Thomas' tone when he said "you don't find it, son, you make it." And the pain in Red's face when he found out Cindy was "gone" along with his old team after learning she had dementia.
Buck will be damned if he stops fighting for his family; or, more importantly, for himself.
[[Obvious canon and timeline divergence: Buck knew about Daniel and his being a savior-baby before leaving Hershey. Eddie's will was changed following the tsunami. He meets (and loses) Red at some point after the ladder truck bombing.]]

Summary
When he eventually returned to LA, things had settled. Athena had managed to knock some sense into Bobby and he was finally welcomed back to the 118 with open arms. He was home. But he couldn’t help but feel like something was missing. It was like playing the guitar once again had awoken something in him he’d buried long ago. So, the night after his first shift back, he went out and bought a new guitar.
For months he played in the comfort of his own home, not yet confident enough to share with the 118. He still played for Maddie though, enjoying the smile on her face as his fingers plucked the strings. He'd missed it. Music made him feel completeSeries

Summary
Eddie, he wants to say. They’re sitting on opposite beds, speaking in low tones in case they’re overheard. Eddie, Buck wants to breathe. You think everything is too soon.
But that’s cutting a little too close to being a metaphor for something. So Buck just says, “Yeah maybe.” and hopes it doesn’t sound too much like, I’m so tired of being alone.
OR: Everyone always leaves, so Buck never expected Eddie to stay.

Summary
They’re in the middle of a game of pool when Buck brings it up, but everyone seems focused on making a shot rather than paying him any mind. He understood of course. Everyone saw it as Buck making a fuss over some non-existent thing. Only it didn’t feel that way, at least not to him. So, he pushes forward, allows himself to be vulnerable and share his worries. But like everything else, it blows up in his face.
Chimney, albeit unknowingly, strikes the all-too-familiar match. "So, it’s all about you then?"
And Buck knows that the words are meant in a teasing way. He watches them all chuckle at Chim’s words, like it’s a secret joke between the rest of them. But a small part of him can’t help but wonder if this is how they see him, how they've always seen him; selfish.
