She does ask Chris, and he thinks it’s a good idea—says as much, on the phone, and doesn’t say much else.
“Buck will probably be hovering,” is what Chris does volunteer.
It still surprises her when the man who opens the door is not Eddie. It’s—Captain America, is the thing that actually comes to mind—a man close to a foot taller than she is, if not more than that, with blond curls and broad shoulders, and he’s got a question in his very blue eyes that’s probably less friendly than the one he actually asks her.
“Uh,” he says. “Can I help you?”

“Hi, this is Firefighter Buckley with the 118. Isabel and Josephina got a clean bill of health, sir. You don’t have anything to worry about, I’ll be here with them if they have any questions for us,” Buck reassures, and, surprisingly, he’s met with absolute silence on the other end.
He waits a few seconds, then lowers the phone to check if the call dropped. It still says ‘Edmundo’ on the screen, and Buck catches a glance at the contact picture of said Edmundo on Isabel’s phone, and gapes for a moment. The guy’s real young, holding a newborn baby in his arms, baseball cap pulled down over most of his face but a dazzling smile, clear as day, peaks out.
“Right. Uh, thank you, Firefighter Buckley.” And wow, oh. It’s a nice voice too, velvet and rich sounding. A little gravelly, but in a very pleasant way. Buck likes it. But not in any way that means something. Objectively, it’s a nice sounding voice. Right.

May realised a very long time ago that Buck was basically her stepbrother. So, when the lightning strike finally provided the impetus for Bobby to admit that he also brought a kid into their family, she had every intention of seizing the opportunity to properly integrate Buck into the Grant-Nash family.
And, look, if in the process she also gains a brother-in-law… clearly the universe was just waiting for the opportunity to make that happen.

eddie's not entirely sure he believes in getting help, at least not for himself. there's only so much healing to be had for a body torn apart by bullets, for a mind that's only half there, for a man who's been leaving pieces of himself behind all his life with nothing to take their place.
except, as it turns out, falling apart happens in increments, and healing does, too: it happens when you gnaw a hole in your lip trying to keep quiet only to have the words escape; when you realize that the ghost you've been seeing out of the corner of your eye is yourself; when your best friend smiles, and you allow it to take your breath away.
it happens through the smallest of things: bird feeders, and cacti, and pasta shapes.

She said she thinks Buck and I are codependent,” Eddie continues, not noticing Hen’s amusement. “That’s crazy, right? Of course we spend a lot of time together, we’re best friends. Who else am I going to hang out with?”
“I mean, your girlfriend?” Hen suggests. “When was the last time you saw Marisol before today?”
“I saw her four days ago,” Eddie says, unclear what Hen’s trying to get at with her line of questioning. “She watched Chris while Buck and I went to grab dinner and see a movie.”
Hen blinks.
“Let me get this straight,” Hen says, sounding more and more incredulous the longer Eddie speaks. “You had your girlfriend watch your son so you could go on a date with Buck?”

The patrons around them cheer. Eddie digs his nails into Buck’s skin harsh enough to make him wince.
“Oh,” he breathes. “This is for couples.”

There’s a pause on the other end of the line. “Actually,” a rustle of files, “We were calling about a girl by the name of June Foster."

That’s all?, Buck wants to scream, because every relationship he has is tied to the job in some way, and first Maddie left, and then it was Chimney, and now it’s Eddie. But he doesn’t scream, because that would be a little bit too tragic, even for him, and nods instead. Bites his tongue. Pretends that he isn't falling apart where he's stood.

And where matters of the heart were concerned, Stede ached, ached all the way down to his bones with his own conflicted feelings about where he stood in life now, not only in his own rights, but also in the newfound relationship he'd somehow been deemed worthy enough to partake in.
Even now, he could still hardly believe it, even as a good few solid months have passed him by in a whirl since he returned. He'd never dreamt that he could have anything in this life that felt even half as good as being with both Ed and Izzy surely did, but he had also never felt or even knew himself capable of feeling such a huge, tenderly aching love for them both.
It laps at his heart like the ocean does a beach, a balm to his soul he never realized felt so very lonely, up until it wasn't.
