Summary
Jee’s nose scrunches up in consideration. “Hmmm.” She counts out the gumdrops on her plate. “Okay, but take the red ones. I don’t really like those.” Maddie scoffs in amusement and Eddie smiles, receiving four red gumdrops in his hand.
“Wow, thank you! The cherry ones are my favorite.” He makes a big show of shoving them all in his mouth at once and can’t stop his face from twisting up at the flavor, exposing the lie immediately. They taste like cough syrup. Maddie and Jee burst into giggles, and despite the attack on his taste buds, Eddie breaks into a goofy smile too. “Mmm. Just what I wanted.”
Buck smiles to himself, tears springing up as he watches them from the living room. Eddie and his girls.

It was the first of the too many very unsettling facts Buck had dropped in casual conversation as if they were totally normal. He’d really just added a parenthetical “I was only about four, so I hadn’t taught myself how to cry silently yet” to a story while they did inventory side by side on a slow day. What ensued was a full minute of Eddie staring at Buck trying to figure out why any kid would teach themselves to cry silently, and Buck staring at Eddie trying to figure out why any kid wouldn’t.

Summary
There's an active shooter situation at Powell Middle School. The 118 rushes to the scene to be of assistance and to ensure the safety of Christopher Diaz and Denny Wilson, who are students there.
Science teacher Evan Buckley will do whatever he can to get his students out of the situation safely, though escape seems unlikely from their position in the 3rd-floor library. Things get worse when an explosion brings part of the building down. Amidst the wreckage, he seeks to save the kids and find his sister. He winds up finding the family he never knew he always wanted.
Alternate Universe fic. Things to know for the 'verse is that Buck is Christopher and Denny's science teacher at Powell Middle School. Because he isn't a firefighter, he does not know any of the 118. Maddie ended up taking a job as the school's nurse--and she never got introduced to Chimney. The rest is fairly canon. Athena and Bobby are still married. Harry is staying with his dad in Miami.
TW: Most of the story will take place during the aftermath of a school shooting where explosives are set off. There are some gunshot wounds as well as other injuries described (though most not graphically).

I can pet Buttercu-” TK cut himself off, his eyes instantly welled up with tears again and his hands were balled up in tight fists in his hair. “No. No, no, no!” TK wailed and thrashed, not allowing Carlos to touch him. “Buttercup is hurt! He needs me. Let me go! We have to go get him.”
“Buttercup is with your dad tonight. Do you want me to call him and ask for an update on Buttercup?” Carlos had moved to block TK in with his legs, not allowing the smaller man to get up and leave. “I can call him, okay?”
“No!” TK shouted a little more aggressively than he meant to, but it got his message across. “He can’t know. He’ll tell them and they’ll take me back and I can’t go back.” His hysteria had simmered down to sniffling and he moved closer to Carlos.
